LEAGUE CITY, Texas—Clear Creek Independent School District has recently had two students compete in the Texas Botball Robotics tournament held at the University of Houston, placing second in the robot task competition and taking the overall second place tournament trophy, which recognizes efforts in design, programming robot performance and online journal and documentation.

This year, the Botball Robonauts consisted of Ithamar Glumac, Clear Creek High School freshman, and Jason Klein, Clear Lake High School freshman. Glumac and Klein have been working on designing, building and programming their robot for the Texas Botball Tournament since January.

In preparing for the contest, Glumac and Klein have been working with NASA mentors Bill Bluethmann, Carlo Ayuste, Brett Sommers and Dave Thomas. Ayuste, Sommers and Thomas are former Robonauts who have returned to volunteer as mentor engineers. Kaylynn Burns, Instructional Technology Specialist, served as the District sponsor for the Botball team.

Clear Creek ISD participates in the Botball program as a part of the district’s Robonaut activities made possible through a collaboration with NASA-JSC and Lockheed Martin, with funding provided by a grant from NASA-JSC. This was Clear Creek ISD’s second year to compete in the Botball program. Clear Creek ISD’s participation in Botball is designed as a transition opportunity for freshmen between BEST Robotics in grades 6-8 and FIRST Robotics in grades 10-12.
