Kindergarten Parents Invited to Learn More About Estrellas Program for Learning in Both English and Spanish

Children develop fluency in both English and Spanish in a two-way immersion program, in the CCISD/UHCL Professional Development Laboratory School at McWhirter Elementary

LEAGUE CITY — Parents of 2006-2007 school year kindergartners are invited to meetings regarding the new Two-Way Immersion program at McWhirter PDLS Elementary School. In the two-way immersion program, both Spanish and English speaking students share a classroom and receive instruction in both languages. The classroom consists of approximately 50 percent native Spanish speakers and 50 percent native English speakers.

Benefits of Two-Way Immersion includes: bilingualism, development of language and cognitive skills, increased intellectual growth, enhanced interpersonal communication, increased self-esteem, improved listening skills, development of flexible thinking, increased future marketability, and better performance on standardized tests (2002 Collier-Thomas study).

The meetings are at McWhirter Elementary PDLS located at 300 Pennsylvania in Webster. Meetings begin at 6 p.m. and end at 7 p.m.
