Learning more about the work of a school board and workshopBoard workshop covers what school board members do and how to run for a school board position By Marilyn Clark, League City Area News Online February 14, 2006 LEAGUE CITY, Texas—Residents who would like to learn more about how the school board works, as well as those who are interested in running for a position on the school board, can learn about the work of a school board member by attending a free candidate workshop Wednesday, March 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Region 4 Education Service Center, Room 101. The Region 4 Education Service Center is located at 7145 West Tidwell, Houston, Texas. Workshop reservations are not required and anyone may attend. "If you are thinking about running to be a school board member, your best bet is to go to the workshop." said Tanya Barnett, TASB leadership team services. "It is given by experienced board members and they can answer all the questions you could possibly have." Barnett reported that the workshop will cover how it feels to be a trustee, the key responsibilities of the board, staff member distribution authority, constructive campaigning, and where to find more information. 'A Call to Service,' a video created by TABS, will feature many components of board service and several seasoned school trustees. Barnett suggested trying the ($25) online workshop version — "Call to Action Workshop" — if you want to get started right away — https://www.tasb.org/apps/tasbstore/storeDetail.cfm?kv=246 . "This information is what the presenters use to present the regional board candidate workshop," Barnett said. For those looking for a book about what a school board does and how to run for school board, TASB has written the $10 "2006 Guide for School Board Candidates." Barnett provided the following information about the guide: The book includes information about the school board roles and responsibilities, how to campaign ethically, and a brief review of election laws with which candidates need to be familar. Also in the book are more in depth resources on financing a campaign, report requirements, and guidelines for election advertising. See — https://www.tasb.org/apps/tasbstore/storeDetail.cfm?kv=192 . For more details about the workshop in Houston or the online version contact Tanya Barnett at TASB, (512) 467-0222 or (800) 580-8272, extension 6248. or email her at tanya.barnett@tasb.org .
