God of the new now

I have been reading in the Old Testament book of Isaiah. This prophet writes a lot about new beginnings. Based on what the Lord says in Isaiah 43:18, 19, I recommend the following prayer:

“Lord, it’s a new day, but I’m not feeling very “new” today.
I’m more like old and stale and tired.

I’m tired of the business of living in the usual rut,
tired of the same old sins that drag me down,
the same old doubts that plague me,
the same old habits I can’t seem to break.
Do a new thing in my life today, Lord!

When I see the red in a rose or the flight of a butterfly let it be for me an occasion for praise and wonder.
When I see the twinkle in a child’s eyes or the smile that lights up their face, let my heart answer with joy.

When I eat my food or soil my hands in labor or shuffle papers on my desk or vacuum the floors or wash the dishes or…
let me have an attitude of gratitude.

O Lord of the new beginning, deliver me from the mundane.
Make a glorious new way in my desert; make fresh flowing streams in my wasteland.

God of the new now, transform my world today. Amen.”
