Religion: A Pastor PondersA moment of silence?By Pastor William Jenkins June 28, 2007
I was reading about a group of people recently who were observing a “moment of silence” for a particular event. I asked myself, “A moment of silence? What’s that?” Moments of silence have become popular these days. What is “a moment of silence”? It is a politically correct substitute for prayer…without the power. When observing a “moment of silence” does the mind go blank? Does one think about what they are being silent for? Where is the lasting benefit in a “moment of silence”? I can understand how one might reflect upon a situation or person and relate their lives to the object of a “moment of silence” and maybe receive some consolation. But when a “moment of silence” is substituted for prayer there is no petition to a higher Power, no intercession on behalf of someone. A “moment of silence” is a vast impotent void, empty of heart and soul and God. It reminds me of Genesis 1:1, “The earth was without form and void and there was darkness upon the face off the deep.” Now, that was a moment of silence! Reading in Acts 12 about the imprisonment of Peter, I notice that there was no “moment of silence” for Peter. Instead, “The church was passionately praying to God for him.” They were pounding on the gates of heaven with all their might. If ever I am in need or have some great misfortune in my life, please do not have a “moment of silence” for me. Please pray mightily on my behalf; intercede at the throne of Mercy and Grace; call upon God to come to my aid! “Moments of Silence” are for those who do not know that God is in control. Prayer is for those who believe that the God who made us loves us. League City United Methodist Church is located at 1411 Main Street (FM 518), one block east of Interstate 45.
